Jack’s class will be studying Africa for the year (African history, literature, etc.). This week they were asked to pick an African proverb as a kick off assignment. Jack chose the following:
“A wise person will always find a way.”
I’m beginning to wonder if this will be a guiding principle for Jack this year. He is in a class with no native English speakers and the other kids avoid speaking English (their second language) whenever possible. This has made for a difficult social-start to the year.
Jack-and-snake --- adventure or misadventure? : )
At the very least, he hasn’t lost his sense of humor. Tonight when we talked about some of the challenges to start the year, I said “if nothing else, this year is going to be an adventure.” In classic Jack fashion, his response was “Adventure? More like a misadventure…”
Mom-and-kid-time on the trampoline...
Although I recognize and believe that this will be such a tremendous opportunity for growth for Jack (and all of us), that doesn’t make it any easier to watch him or any of the kids struggle. As a mom, I want to ease their struggles, but I also have to remind myself to let them recognize their own strength through these challenges.
